Frequently asked questions
Is our tallow deodorized?
Absolutely not. The tallow skincare industry has become tainted, and many brands are outsourcing their tallow from mass producers who mix in trim fat, deodorize, and add other chemicals to mask the smell. We hand-pick suet tallow during our monthly farm visits and render it in-house. It never leaves our hands.
Do you use organic ingredients?
Yes! When possible, we source our ingredients from organic sources. All of our herbs and oils used for infusions are always organic.
Does your tallow smell beefy?
Tallow has a slight smell due to it being an animal product, and every batch is different since it's made by hand. Our tallow products do not smell beefy when applied to skin. Our formulas are designed to help you enjoy tallow without the beefy smell.
How do you render your tallow?
Our in-house rendered tallow is always dry-rendered. This means just the suet fat is melted low and slow and then filtered. We only do this once to preserve the natural fatty acid profile, vitamins, and beneficial components that rendering multiple times can alter. Many companies wet render their tallow, but we have found that this defeats the point of real, authentic tallow skincare. Adding water and rendering multiple times reduces the beneficial components of tallow and is unnecessary.
Do you use kidney suet tallow or trim fat?
We never use any trim fat in our tallow products. Trim fat is the fat you can find on the entire body of the cow, while kidney suet fat (preferred for skincare) is just around the kidneys. It is a richer, higher-concentration fat that is much firmer and less smelly than trim fat. You won't find us using any cheap alternate routes in our tallow products. We use 100% kidney suet tallow in all of our tallow products.
