A little about us

Hey there, I'm Maria — and if you told me five years ago I'd be running a hot sauce company, I would've laughed and handed you another plate from the kitchen.

I was a chef, deep in the restaurant world, when I accidentally stumbled into a hot sauce company that needed some help. I thought I'd consult for a few months, share what I knew, and head back to the line. But here's the thing: I fell hard. Not just for the sauce itself, but for everything around it — the product creation, the marketing, the branding, the farmers we worked with, the way a bottle could tell a story. I ended up doing literally everything in that company for two and a half years because I couldn't pull myself away.

When I finally left, I made a hot sauce as a gift for my now-business partner, Vanessa, for her crêpe shop. We called it "Vanessa's Smokin' Hot Sauce," and honestly, I didn't think much of it at the time. It was just a one-off creation for a friend.
But then a year later, Vanessa called me saying people were buying the sauce and coming back for more. And me? At the time, I was back in the restaurant industry and absolutely miserable, realizing that restaurants didn't light me up anymore.

So in 2024, we decided to go for it. We got the ball rolling, and by 2025, I quit my restaurant job and started working at Vanessa's crêpe shop, pouring everything I had into building Maria's Sauce Co from the ground up. I started over — rethinking what makes a great hot sauce company, what creates compelling branding, what builds an authentic brand voice. I wanted to create something that wasn't just delicious, but meaningful.

Every bottle I make is small-batch and crafted by hand using ingredients from local farms whenever possible. Because here's what I learned in all those years: real flavor starts in the soil, and the farmers who grow our food deserve so much more support and spotlight than they get. When you buy from me, you're not just getting a sauce — you're investing in a value-add product that supports our local growers, fights food waste, and proves that you don't have to compromise on quality or ethics to create something incredible.

I threw myself into this because I believe food should be fearless, farmers should be celebrated, and sometimes the best things in life come from happy accidents and saying "yes" when an opportunity knocks.

So, are you ready to get sauced with me? Let's turn up the heat, support our community, and make every meal a saucy affair to remember. 🌶️💋

Frequently asked questions

What makes Maria's hot sauces different?

No flavors. No emulsifiers. No junk. Just real ingredients. Every bottle is made in small batches — the kind of ingredients you'd find in your own kitchen. We don't cut corners, and we don't hide behind fancy additives. What you taste is what we grew and crafted, plain and simple.

Where do you source your ingredients?

From local farms right here in our community. Real flavor starts in the soil, and I work directly with farmers who grow with care. By sourcing locally, we're supporting our growers, reducing food waste, and ensuring the freshest ingredients make it into every bottle.

How long do the sauces last once opened?

Because we use real ingredients without preservatives, refrigerate after opening and enjoying within 6-9 months for peak freshness. But honestly? Most people finish them way before that.

Do you ship locally or offer delivery?

Yes! We are located in Traverse City, MI and at numerous markets in the area during the summer. Send us a message to coordinate your pickup!

Can I buy in bulk or wholesale?

Absolutely. We offer wholesale pricing for retailers, restaurants, and cafés. Minimum order is 2 cases (12 bottles per case). Shoot me a message and let's chat!

Are your sauces gluten-free/vegan/etc.?

YES! *most* of our sauces are gluten-free/vegan. Be sure to check the listed ingredients or shoot us a message if you have additional ingredient inquiries about our small batch sauces.

I have a question you didn't answer here!

I love hearing from you. Seriously. Drop me a message at maria@mariashotsauce.com, and let's talk sauce. 🌶️
